On Friday – completely un-noticed by basically everyone – William Beardsley officially became a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2010.
A long shot candidate to become the second “Governor William Beardsley” in the country (if you can believe that there is one already), this development did not come with any kind of press release that we are aware of, or outreach or announcement. Not a good start if he is serious about his bid – indeed, I have attempted to contact him multiple times and haven’t gotten a word back. I was alerted to this development – incredibly – by a comment on this blog.
This reinforces the idea that Beardsley’s entry into the race is somewhat unremarkable, and will have little impact. He is a well respected human being, but right now I do not see what hole he fills in the GOP primary. His name ID is virtually non-existent, he has no history in elected politics, his credentials are that of a college president, and he has no identifiable core constituency. Coupling that with a dark communications effort for his entry, and we can only assume at this point that he is not even remotely serious about running.
Which begs the question – why is he running? Can he even generate enough votes to hurt somebody else in the race? Is he trying to bring attention to a pet cause?
We just don’t know, and we won’t know until he starts communicating.
