John Knutson Re-elected Democratic Party Chairman

John Knutson – incidentally that is my mother’s maiden name, so minor shout out there – has been unanimously re-elected as Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party.

The grouping of about 100 Democrats in the Augusta Civic Center had no trouble rewarding the Chairman who has lead them to large gains in the Maine House, Maine Senate and helped guide a double digit victory for Barack Obama in 2008.

In remarks following his election, Knutson had the following to say.

“’09 and ’10 mean an awful lot to us here,” he said. “The Obama campaign considers Maine to be a very important state. The ability to control redistricting is very important in this cycle.”

Little to doubt there with that statement, especially the redistricting comment.  As any first year political science student knows, gerrymandering districts is still a widespread practice, and being the party who is able to draw those lines is incredibly important to the future of elections in the state for quite some time.

The meeting of Democrats also saw some other minor business, and of course the election of the rest of the executive board.

The other officers elected were as follows:

  • Vice Chair – Marianne Stevens, of Kingfield, Frankln County
  • Secretary – Susan Cook, of Bath, Sagadahoc County
  • Treasurer – Chrisso Rheault, of New Gloucester, Cumberland County
